Description:

Course description - INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL WORK WITH PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES: conceptual determination, theoretical approaches to disability, causes of disability, position in society. - TYPES OF DISABILITY: persons with different types of impairment, persons with hearing impairment, persons with speech impairment, persons with visual impairment, persons with intellectual disabilities, persons with multiple disorders, persons with physical impairments, persons with autism, persons with rare diseases, Homeland war persons with disabilities, persons with mental health problems, and persons with chronic diseases. - PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES AND SOCIETY: historical aspects of the attitude of society towards persons with disabilities, recent developments and trends, attitudes and reactions of society towards persons with disabilities, quality of life, poverty, disability as a stigma, social integration of persons with disabilities. - PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES AND FAMILY: families of persons with disabilities, rights to marry and parenthood of persons with disabilities, leisure time of persons with disabilities. - EDUCATION, REHABILITATION AND EMPLOYMENT OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES - RIGHTS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES: international regulations and regulations in the Republic of Croatia about rights of persons with disabilities in social welfare system, educational system, pension system, housing and health care. - SOCIAL WORK AND PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES: manners of support and empowerment of persons with disabilities, self-help of persons with disabilities through various movements and associations.

Cognitive Skills:

After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:

- define aims and basic principles in social work with persons with disabilities

- explain types of impairment which result in disability

- define different approaches and criteria in determining disability

- recognise basic characteristics of individual types of disability

- describe and explain determinants of social position of persons with disabilities in society

- single out and discuss basic paradigms and models of approaching disability

- describe different theoretical starting points in understanding disability

- identify, explain and group rights and services intended for persons with disabilities.

 

Application

After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:

- interpret patterns and characteristics of social positon of persons with disabilities in society and use knowledge about various impairments

- interpret specific features of families of persons with disabilities

- use guidelines from various theoretical approaches in recognising the needs of persons with disabilities and members of their families

- use knowledge about the rights from various systems: social security, education system, pension system, health care system in planning interventions in the work with persons with disabilities

- demonstrate the process of planned changes in work wirh persons with disabilities

 

Analysis

After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:

- categorise different definitions and approaches to disability

- analyse various forms of support to persons with disabilities

- compare the position of persons with disabilities in international documents and legal regulation of the Republic of Croatia

- distinguish specific chracteristics of persons with certain types of disability and analyse the context of needed support

 

Synthesis

After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:

- plan important elements in assessment of needs of persons with disabilities

- organise collected information about a persons with disabilities and members of their families

- prepare a social case history of a person with disability

- propose the application of individual rights and services, and needed interventions intended for the improvement of quality of life of persons with disabilities.

 

 

Evaluation

After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:

- design and prepare a protocol for the assessment of social position of dpersons with disabilities

- understand and evaluate specific characteristics of families of persons with disabilities.

- propose, design and organise the procedure of realisation of rights or services for a person with disability within social security system

- apply specific features connected to communication with persons with disabilities

- plan and implement a meeting wth persons with disabilities with the aim of assessing family situation

Practical and Generic Skills:

After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:

- develop communication skills

- publicly present acquired learning outcomes

- ability to plan and manage professional work with persons with disabilities

- ability to clearly express their own attitudes and thinking

 

 

Matching Assessments to Learning Outcomes:

Acquired learning outcomes are tested on several levels and modalities:

- mid-term examination and written examination (open-ended questions)

- oral examination

- workshop in small groups in lectures.
