The History of Modern Time Political Theories is an optional course for the 5th-grade law students and all other students interested in the development of political thought. It unites history with political science, two different scientific disciplines required to understand the nature of law, which remains our main topic of interest. Therefore, all HMTPT topics shall include the theory of the state, the concept of law, and the relation between law and justice or law and morals. If not agreed otherwise, the course topics are limited to Modern Times.
The course explores the fundamental issues of political and legal theories, beginning with understanding the causes of political theories’ emergence and their influence on the state and law. By reading past or present philosophical and political texts, students will examine the basic structure and formulated ideas of seminal works in political theory. Following the intersections of political theory and law, emphasis should be placed on the fundamental questions of jurisprudence in historical context without losing awareness of the contemporary reality.
The course has no prerequisites, though previous coursework in legal history (most notably constitutional, international or European law), political theory or philosophy would be helpful. Personal preferences are respected, allowing the students to focus more on specific topics such as political ethics, terrorism or human rights.
The course will introduce students to legal skills in relation to finding legal sources. By the end of the course, students should be able to examine and comprehend texts in legal and political theory. The reading diary of 10,000 words and the oral presentation are to be delivered at the end of the course.
