Assistant Professor Stjepka Popović completed the University Study of Sociology at the Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb, the Postgraduate specialist study of Local Democracy and Development at the Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Zagreb, and a doctorate in social work at the Zagreb University Faculty of Law. She has been an assistant professor at the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb since June 2021, where she teaches the following courses: Sociology, Basics of Sociology, Sociology Seminar, Introduction to Sociology and Sociology of the Croatian Society. Before that, for seven and a half years, she worked as a teaching assistant and postdoc at the Department of Social Sciences and Medical Humanities, Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka and at the Department of Public Health, Faculty of Health Studies, University of Rijeka, where she taught Medical Sociology, Sociology of Health, Child Sexual Abuse and Sociology of Child Sexual Abuse. From 2011 to 2013, she worked as an external associate at the Faculty of Political Sciences, Journalism Department, where she taught Media and Children’s Rights and Journalistic Ethics. At the same time, she worked for three years as a project manager for the prevention of peer violence at the Zagreb Counselling Centre against Child and Youth Violence “Luka Ritz”.

During her employment at the Department of Sociology, she participated as a member of the research team in the projects “Sociology and Legal Education” and “Attitudes of Students of the Faculty of Law in Zagreb towards Political and Social Issues: a comparative perspective”. She is currently a member of the project “Research on Peer Violence among Children and Youth in the City of Zagreb”. She has been the team leader of the scientific project “Media Reporting, Presentation and Stereotypes about Child Sexual Abuse”, and participated as a member in the COST CA19106 projects “Multi-Sectoral Responses to Child Abuse and Neglect in Europe: Incidence and Trends” (2020 – 2022), “Media Representation of Children: Analysis of Scientific Production and Analysis of Media Text” and “Pedagogical Aspects of Family Relationships”. She researches on child sexual abuse, violence against and among children and media coverage of social problems.

She has presented her research at several international scientific conferences and published nine scientific papers. As part of the academic mobility funded by the University of Rijeka, in February 2017, she attended professional training in the implementation of the content analysis method at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. She has attended scientific training in the field of violence against children at the Haruv Institute in Jerusalem, organized three conferences in the field of children’s rights protection, and published three editorial books (proceedings). She has founded the international scientific conference “Child Maltreatment & Well-Being” (CMW). So far, she has (co)mentored five students in preparation of their graduate theses. From 2014 to 2015, she was the editor-in-chief of the scientific journal Jahr – European Journal of Bioethics, which is indexed in the Scopus and ERIH plus databases, and she was the editor of the same journal until 2018. She is a member of the Croatian Sociological Society and ISPCAN (The International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse & Neglect). She is also a member of the Committee for the creation of the Action Plan for the Prevention of Peer Violence in the City of Zagreb for 2024-2025.
