The First Doctoral Degree at the University and Faculty of Law

The First Doctoral Promotions at a Croatian University. (Official Gazette, 24. 12. 1877.)

At the Senate session of 6 December 1877, the procedure for holding a doctoral promotion ceremony was adopted, based on a text recited in Latin by the candidate and the promoter. Shortly after the promotion procedure was adopted, Rector Konstantin Vojnović ordered the ceremonial promotion of the first doctors. Two candidates met the requirements for the promotion to the degree of Doctor of Law: Robert pl. Vernić-Turanjski and Franjo Slama, and Aleksandar Šmit to the degree of Doctor of Theology. The promotion was held on Sunday, 23 December 1877, in the large hall of the then Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts in the Upper Town, because the University, then located on Catherine’s Square, did not have an auditorium. … The promotion was attended by Ban Ivan Mažuranić in person….
