On December 12, 2024, U.S. Ambassador H.E. Nathalie Rayes visited the Faculty of Law in Zagreb. The visit began with a meeting with the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Dr. Ivan Koprić. The focus of the meeting was a discussion on the existing academic cooperation between the faculty and universities in the United States, opportunities for knowledge exchange, and new possibilities of collaboration.
This was followed by a lecture for students titled “Navigating Life and Career,” which the ambassador delivered to a full lecture hall of senior-year students. Ambassador Rayes shared her inspirational life story, including her Venezuelan heritage, her journey to the United States, academic experiences, and her motivation to contribute to the community, which influenced her rich and diverse career path in the public, private, and even NGO sectors. She also outlined her key priorities as an ambassador in Croatia, which include ensuring the safety of U.S. citizens, supporting Ukraine, modernizing defence capabilities, assisting Croatia in establishing a diverse energy network, supporting Croatia’s leadership in guiding neighbouring countries toward Euro-Atlantic institutional integration, fostering economic development, and enhancing communication and collaboration across governmental, public, and business sectors.
During the lecture, the ambassador emphasized the importance of hard work and continuous learning, encouraging students to choose careers that will bring them fulfilment, purpose, and motivation. Showing understanding and a positive attitude, she reminded students that persistence can help them achieve all their goals and that failures should not define them —success will follow. At the end of the lecture, students had a unique opportunity to ask questions directly to the ambassador. The excellent lecture and Q&A session undoubtedly left a strong impression on the students. We are certain that this experience will serve as a positive motivation for their lives and future careers.
