Prof. Matej Avbelj, Professor of European Law and Vice-Rector at Nova Univerza, Slovenia, delivered a lecture at the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, as part of the Law, Society, and Democratic Public Governance lecture series.
Titled AI, Constitutionalism and the New World Order, the lecture took place on Wednesday, 12 February 2025. Prof. Avbelj is also the lead researcher of the Jean Monnet project on pluralism in the European Union (PluralEU).
Dean Prof. Ivan Koprić opened the event, introducing Prof. Avbelj and inviting attendees to engage with questions and comments on this pressing topic. The event drew a large number of academics, students, and external guests.
Prof. Avbelj covered topics such as the social construction of reality, technological development, artificial intelligence, and a society governed by algorithms, as well as constitutional challenges and the transformations brought about by new technologies, including the emergence of a new world order. He highlighted key areas and approaches to addressing these challenges, offering insights into constitutionalism and governance in a significantly altered environment, expressing the view that the advent of artificial intelligence represents a technological shift of unprecedented societal impact.
The session concluded with a lively discussion, where attendees raised questions and debated potential solutions in a world that is undergoing a radical transformation.
