The Faculty of Law in Zagreb hosted the annual meeting of the CIEL network (Comparative International and European Law), which took place on 9 and 10 October 2023, at the Faculty’s premises, organized by the International Mobility Office. The meeting was attended by representatives from partner universities in Antwerp, Dublin, Maastricht, Mannheim, and colleagues from Toulouse and Barcelona participated online via Zoom.

On behalf of the Dean, Professor Ivan Koprić, the meeting was opened with an introductory speech by the Vice-Dean for International and Interinstitutional Cooperation, Professor Iris Goldner Lang, and the program was moderated by Jelena Tadić Cegnar.

The Faculty of Law in Zagreb collaborates with six other European universities to offer students a special exchange program within the ERASMUS context. CIEL is designed so that students who successfully complete the program receive the European Master in Comparative International and European Law (CIEL) certificate in addition to their diploma upon graduation.

The aim of the CIEL network is to promote the mobility of students studying comparative, international, or European law at the graduate level at one of the partner universities:

  • Maastricht University (The Netherlands)
  • Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Spain)
  • University De Toulouse 1 Capitole (France)
  • University of Antwerp (Belgium)
  • University of Mannheim (Germany)
  • University College Dublin (Ireland)

The first day of the meeting was dedicated to reviewing the annual work within the CIEL network, whereas during the second day, participants exchanged experiences on three topics: 1. Promotion and communication activities in the field of internationalization, 2. Other potential forms of international cooperation, with an emphasis on the mobility of teaching staff, 3. Discussion on the potential joint summer school in Zagreb.

After the meeting, the guests enjoyed a tourist tour of Zagreb, and on Tuesday, a joint trip to Samobor followed. Colleagues from partner universities took advantage of the meeting in Zagreb to meet their students who are currently on exchange at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb, and some also had scheduled meetings with our professors with whom they share the same legal field of work.

The International Mobility Office reminds that the Call for Academic Mobility for 2024 (1st round) is currently open, so the teaching staff can consider destinations within the CIEL network with which the Faculty has excellent cooperation.
