On Monday, 23 June 2025, the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, officially opened the second edition of the Zagreb Law Summer School, an international academic programme titled “Law, Society, and Crises of Democracy in the 21st Century.”

The Summer School has brought together students from around ten countries. Its programme takes an interdisciplinary approach to current challenges facing democracy and the rule of law, within the broader context of legal, political, social, economic, and ideological transformations in contemporary society.

At the opening ceremony, participants were welcomed with introductory remarks by:

  • Professor Iris Goldner Lang, Ph.D., Vice Dean for International and Inter-Institutional Cooperation and Quality Management,
  • Martina Batistić, Pol. Sci., univ. spec., representing the Office for International Cooperation and Projects,
  • and Associate Professor Dario Čepo, Ph.D., as one of the academic coordinators of this year’s Summer School.

In their addresses, the speakers extended a warm welcome to the participants and introduced them to the Faculty of Law, the work of the Office for International Cooperation and Projects, and the concept and programme of the Summer School.
They emphasised the importance of international academic exchange, the promotion of democratic values and the rule of law, as well as the development of critical thinking.
During individual introductions, participants shared their academic interests and motivations for joining this valuable programme.

The Summer School runs from 23 June to 4 July 2025 and features lectures by renowned Croatian and international experts, as well as social and cultural activities and study visits to institutions relevant to the School’s theme.
The programme is delivered in English, and upon successful completion, participants receive a certificate and 4 ECTS credits.

The opening day was concluded with a welcome dinner, providing an opportunity for students and organisers to meet in an informal setting and exchange expectations prior to the intensive academic programme.
