Organized by the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, the first International Memorial Course Marko Petrak – Roman Legal Tradition and Contemporary Legal Systems was held at the Interuniversity Center in Dubrovnik from 16 to 18 October 2023. The event was initiated in honor and memory of our distinguished teacher and scientist, the late Professor Marko Petrak. The conference was attended by 40 participants, including students from various European countries (Slovenia, Poland, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, etc.), as well as prominent teachers and scholars from numerous eminent European universities and research institutions (Trento, Turin, Ferrara, Frankfurt am Main, Krakow, Warsaw, Ljubljana, etc.). During the three-day- conference, various thematic blocks covered a wide range of topics, ranging from the general relevance of Roman law in legal education and the associated new methodological and conceptual challenges to specific legal issues related to Roman law in antiquity, the Roman-canonical legal tradition in the Middle Ages and the modern era, and their reflections in the contemporary legal context. In this sense, tribute was paid to the life and work of Marko Petrak, who was particularly prominent in all of the aforementioned disciplines. All participants reminisced about their collaboration and friendship with Marko Petrak, and his mother, Professor Jelka Petrak (Faculty of Medicine, University of Zagreb), also attended the event. General conceptual, methodological, and organizational guidelines for future conferences were discussed in the course. Among the various co-organizers of the conference from different universities (University of Zagreb, Università degli Studi di Trento, University of Warsaw, Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Autonomous University of Barcelona, University of Sarajevo), the main organizers from our faculty were Professor Tomislav Karlović and Associate Professor Henrik-Riko Held.
