On 18 May 2026, the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb hosted a delegation from the General Court of the European Union, led by the President of the General Court Marc van der Woude. The delegation’s visit was organised at the invitation of the Department of European Public Law, and the delegation was received by the Vice-Deans of the Faculty of Law, Professor Elizabeta Ivičević Karas and Professor Iris Goldner Lang.
The purpose of the visit was to acquaint participants with the work of the General Court, on which occasion a round table entitled “The Role of the General Court and Current Challenges in EU Law” was held. In the first part of the event, President Marc van der Woude and Judge Maja Brkan spoke about the role of the General Court within the institutional system of the European Union, as well as the new function of advocates general at the General Court and its significance for the development of case law. Particular attention was devoted to the challenges faced by the Court in the context of the growing number of complex cases arising in various areas of European Union law.
In the second part of the event, members of the delegation presented current cases in the fields of competition law, fundamental rights, access to data, and restrictive measures, followed by an active discussion with the many students and academic staff who attended the lecture.
The round table attracted a large number of students and academic staff who showed exceptional interest in the topics presented and actively participated in the discussion, asking numerous questions about the work of the General Court and the current challenges facing the European Union.
