The second International Memorial Course Marko Petrak – Roman Legal Tradition and Contemporary Legal Systems was held in Dubrovnik from the 11th to the 13th of October 2024, in the organisation of the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb. The topic of this year’s course was the law of obligations, both in Antiquity and in its subsequent development through the Middle Ages and modern periods, as well as in civil law codifications. It was entitled Roman Law of Obligations: From Principles to Specifics, from Antiquity to Modern Codifications.
Many distinguished scholars of Roman law and legal history attended, as well as numerous graduate and PhD students from various European countries, including Italy, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. In total, there were over 40 participants from several eminent European universities, such as Padua, Passau, Vienna, Trento, Turin, Budapest, Kraków, and Ljubljana. A variety of relevant and interesting papers were presented, followed by fruitful discussions.
This marked the second memorial course, held in honour of the late Professor Marko Petrak, a renowned teacher and scholar from the Faculty of Law in Zagreb. All the participants fondly remembered him and his work, and pledged to continue collaborative efforts in maintaining and enlarging the relevance of Roman law in legal education and legal science. The main co-organisers from the Faculty of Law in Zagreb were Professor Tomislav Karlović and Associate Professor Henrik-Riko Held.
